Akaa Waterfall is a scenic and lesser-visited waterfall located in the Eastern Region of Ghana, within the grounds of a police training center. It is about 15 minutes from the town of Nkurakan, tucked in lush forest and fed by the Boti River. Often called nature’s undiscovered beauty, it offers a more peaceful and intimate experience compared with other waterfalls in the region.
The Legend Behind the Name
Akaa Waterfall is said to have derived its name from a local legend. Long ago, someone reportedly drowned in the waterfall, and despite all efforts, the body could not be recovered. Years later, the person’s skeleton was discovered locked in the rocks, stuck between the crevices.
In Twi, the word “Akaa” means “stuck”, and so the villagers began calling the site Akaa Waterfall — a name that has endured to this day. This story adds a mysterious and cultural dimension to the waterfall, making it more than just a scenic spot.
Best Time to Visit
The rainy season (June–October) is the perfect time to visit. The waterfall is at its strongest, with gushing water cascading dramatically over rocks, creating an unforgettable natural spectacle.
Entrance & Access
Because Akaa Falls is located within a police training center, visitors must pay an entrance fee. From the entrance, you follow about 250 concrete steps down to the base of the falls, passing through lush forest and enjoying scenic views along the way.
What to Expect
• Water flowing from three sides of the rock, creating a canyon-like effect
• Opportunities for hiking, photography, and nature observation
• A calmer, less crowded experience compared to nearby Boti Falls
Nearby Attractions
Visitors can combine a trip to Akaa Waterfall with other nearby sites:
• Boti Waterfall – famous twin falls ideal for hiking and sightseeing
• Bonsu Eco Park (Bonsu Arboretum) – adventure activities including zipline, horse riding, and picnicking
• Aburi Botanical Gardens – shaded walks and plant exhibits
This legend makes Akaa Falls both culturally intriguing and visually stunning, offering visitors an experience of nature and folklore in one trip.
