What the Dual Citizenship Drive Entails

The dual citizenship drive focuses on improving pathways for eligible individuals to acquire or formalise Ghanaian citizenship. This includes Ghanaians by birth who have acquired foreign nationality, as well as people of African descent with ancestral or historic ties to Ghana.

Through this initiative, applicants are encouraged to engage with Ghana beyond tourism, gaining the legal right to live, work, invest, and fully participate in the country’s social and economic life.

Introduction of a Digital Citizenship Platform

A key component of the dual citizenship drive is the introduction of a digital services platform by the Ministry of the Interior. This online system was created to modernise and streamline citizenship and immigration services.

The platform became fully operational in December 2025, allowing applicants to submit dual citizenship and related applications online. There is currently no official end date for the dual citizenship application process. The service remains ongoing, meaning eligible applicants can apply at any time, provided they meet the required criteria.

However, applicants are advised to regularly check official government communications, as specific programmes or citizenship initiatives may have updated requirements or timelines.

Historic Diasporan Citizenship

As part of Ghana’s effort to reconnect with descendants of the transatlantic slave trade, structured pathways have been introduced for historic diasporan citizenship. This initiative allows people of African descent with proven ancestral connections to Ghana to apply for citizenship.

Applicants undergo a vetting and orientation process, and successful candidates are formally granted Ghanaian citizenship, often during official ceremonies that celebrate unity, heritage, and reconnection.

Legal Framework and Participation

Ghana recognises dual citizenship under its laws, allowing individuals to hold Ghanaian nationality alongside another citizenship.
