The Ministry of the Interior has officially finalised the requirements for obtaining Ghanaian citizenship by historic diasporans. Eligible applicants are encouraged to carefully review the application requirements and procedures outlined below.
Required Documents and Fees
Applicants are required to submit the following documents:
• A completed application form
• Birth certificate
• Bio-data page of a valid passport
• Proof of legal residence in Ghana, specifically a two-year residence permit
• Police clearance or criminal records certificate from both the applicant’s home country and Ghana
• Evidence of strong ties to Ghana
• Proof of DNA to support Ghanaian descent
• Citizenship application fee of GH?25,000.00
Application Process Overview
Interested applicants are required to submit the listed documents and pay an administrative review fee of GHced?s1,500.00 at the designated administrative centre located at the World Trade Center, Accra, from 2nd to 6th February 2026, between 9:00am and 3:00pm. Please note that submissions will not be made at the Ministry of the Interior.
Shortlisted applicants will be notified and invited to complete and submit their citizenship application forms online. Successful applicants will then proceed to pay the full citizenship application fee of GHced?s 25,000.00 and undergo a vetting process.
Upon approval, applicants will participate in a citizenship orientation programme organised by the Diaspora Affairs Office prior to the induction ceremony.
Citizenship Induction Ceremony
Qualified applicants will be formally inducted as Ghanaian citizens during a Citizenship Induction Ceremony scheduled for 5th March 2026, to be officiated by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama. Additional details regarding the venue will be communicated to successful applicants in due course.
Applicants are advised to ensure they meet all eligibility criteria and prepare the required documentation in advance, as all fees paid are non-refundable. The Government of Ghana looks forward to welcoming successful applicants as citizens of Ghana.
