Nzulezu is a remarkable village built entirely on stilts and located in the Western Region of Ghana. With a population of about 500 people, the village sits on Lake Tadane and stands as one of Ghana’s most unique cultural and eco-tourism destinations.
A journey from Accra to Nzulezu takes approximately 7 hours by road, followed by a scenic water journey that leads visitors into the heart of the village.
Life in Nzulezu
The dominant occupations in Nzulezu are farming and fishing, which sustain daily life in the community. One of the most fascinating aspects of village life is how closely residents, especially children, interact with water. By the age of three, many children can swim confidently and paddle canoes across the river with ease.
Before reaching the village, visitors must travel by water:
• A motorized boat ride takes about 30 minutes
• A canoe ride takes approximately 1 hour
The Amansuri Wetlands Experience
The journey to Nzulezu passes through the breathtaking Amansuri Wetlands, a designated Ramsar site and the largest inland swamp forest in Ghana. This wetland ecosystem is rich in biodiversity and is one of the highlights of the trip.
Visitors may encounter a variety of bird species, monkeys, and occasionally crocodiles moving quietly through the swamp, making the journey both thrilling and unforgettable.
Culture, Beliefs, and Daily Living
According to local legend, Nzulezu was founded under the protection of a sacred snail, believed to ensure the safety and survival of the community. This legend remains an important part of the village’s cultural identity.
The village has no connection to the national electricity grid, but residents have adapted by generating power using car batteries at night to ensure safe movement around the village,
