A Visit to Aburi Botanical Gardens: Nature, History and Relaxation Near Accra Just about an hour’s drive from Accra, the Aburi Botanical Gardens is one of Ghana’s most peaceful and refreshing destinations. With its cool weather, towering trees, and calm atmosphere, it’s the perfect escape from the city for anyone looking to relax, enjoy nature, or learn a little history. The gardens were established in 1890 during the colonial era under Governor William Bradford Griffith. Interestingly, before becoming a botanical garden, the site served as a sanatorium in 1875 where recovering government officials stayed for rest and treatment. Over time, the gardens became more than just a green space. They played an important role in supporting cocoa farming in southern Ghana by supplying cocoa seedlings and sharing farming knowledge with local farmers. This contribution helped strengthen Ghana’s cocoa industry over the years. Today, the gardens cover about 160 acres, although only part of it is actively maintained. Visitors can explore a wide variety of plants used for medicinal, ornamental, and educational purposes. There is even a spice section where you can learn about herbs and plants you may have never seen before.
Before entering the gardens, visitors are required to pay an entrance fee. While you can explore on your own, it is highly recommended to request a guided tour service. Having a guide makes the experience much more interesting, especially if you are curious about specific trees, medicinal plants, or the history behind certain areas of the garden. Guides are usually happy to answer questions and explain plants you may be interested in. There is more to do at Aburi Botanical Gardens than just walking around.
Visitors can enjoy activities such as bicycle riding, paintball, quad biking, or simply relax and have a picnic while enjoying the peaceful environment. It’s a great spot for group outings, dates, solo visits, or family trips. The gardens are also known for their scenic spots and beautiful views, making them perfect for photography, networking, or simply unwinding in nature.
Some of the highlights include the Bush House, the Rock Garden, the Pergola (popularly called Lovers’ Lane), the famous Ficus Tree, the retired helicopter on display, and the School of Horticulture.
And of course, no visit is complete without food. The gardens are home to one of the best kebab joints around, making it a great place to grab a quick bite after your walk. You’ll also find snacks, drinks, and small eateries nearby if you want something light while exploring. Whether you’re visiting with friends, family, or on a solo adventure, Aburi Botanical Gardens offers a beautiful mix of relaxation, learning, and outdoor fun all within a short drive from Accra.
